Aromas of sweet kirsch liqueur intermixed with blackberries, underbrush, and plums jump from the glass of this opaque ruby/purple colored 2000. Full-bodied, moderately tannic, dense and structured, with a certain kinky/exotic earthiness, this is the finest Certan de May produced over recent years. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2018.
RATED "91" Robert Parker
Aromas of chocolate, berry and flowers follow through to full-bodied palate, with firm and velvety tannins and a long, long finish. This is a muscular wine that slowly builds on your palate. Slightly funky, but I like it. Needs lots of bottle age. Excellent Certan de May. Best after 2010.

| Chateau Giscours 2003 |
A powerful, broadly textured offering, the 2003 exhibits an inky ruby/purple color in addition to a sweet nose of camphor, melted licorice, smoke, black cherries and cassis. It is dense, powerful, yet at the same time harmonious, elegant and pure, with wonderful sweetness and a voluptous mid-palate and finish. It requires cellaring, but it possesses the stuffing and power to last for 15-18 years. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2020.

| Chateau Haut Bailly 2003 |
Deep ruby/purple with a wonderful nose of roasted herbs and scorched earth, this wine has sweet cherry and black currant fruit notes along with hints of graphite and toasty oak. | Chateau La Conseillante 1996 |
La Conseillante, a quintessentially elegant, plump, fruit-driven wine has turned out an open-knit, seductive wine in the generally tough-textured, tannic year of 1996. The color is deep ruby. The wine possesses medium body, and a sweet, open-knit nose of black raspberries intermixed with pain grille, licorice and smoke. Soft, round and charming, this terroir's raspberry fruit is well-displayed. This 1996 can be drunk, but should keep nicely for 12-15 years.
Anticipate maturity: now-2014.

| Chateau La Conseillante 2000 |
A tremendous effort, and certainly the best La Conseillante since the marvelous duo of 1989 and 1990, the 2000 offers up notes of blackberries and kirsch liqueur intermixed with licorice, incense, spice box, and copious amounts of toasty oak. As the wine sits in the glass, black raspberries, blueberries, smoke along with floral notes emerge. There is tremendous purity, medium to full body, great precision and concentration. Unlike most vintages of La Conseillante, the 2000 will require patience. A bottle kept open refused to oxidize until day six! Anticipated maturity: 2008-2025.

| Chateau Lafon-Rochet 1996 |
One of the sleepers of the 1996 vintage, Lafon-Rochet has turned out an atypically powerful, rich, and concentrated wine bursting with black currant fruit. The opaque purple color gives way to a medium to full-bodied, tannic, backward wine with terrific purity, a sweet, concentrated mid-palate, and a long, blockbuster finish. | Chateau Lagrange 2003 |
Dense purple in color and surprisingly open-knit and velvety textured, the full-bodied, fleshy, succuntly styled 2003 Lagrange is more accessible than most Northern Medocs. With low acidity, silky tannin, and loads of chocolatey black currant and cherry fruit as well as nicely integrated, toasty oak, this sensual wine should drink beautifully and last for 15-18 years.

| Chateau Leoville Poy 2000 |
Wow, this wine has really come on strong. A brilliant effort, it boasts an opaque purple color in addition to a gorgeously sweet nose (make that explosive nose) of blackberries and creme de cassis intermixed with minerals, smoke, and earth. The 2000 is opulent, full-bodied, and much more accessible than either of its two Leoville siblings, Leoville Las Cases or Leoville Barton, with low acidity, sweet tannin, and a layered, sumptuous finish. It continues to improve dramatically and looks to be a great success, rivaling the brilliant 1996 and 1990. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2030.

| Chateau Les Ormes Pez 1996 |
Dark-colored, with good berry and mint aromas and hints of fresh tea leaves. Full-bodied and chewy, with serious concentration of ripe tannins and a medium finish. Needs but a bit more fruit intensity to be outstanding.

A potential sleeper of the vintage, this wine exhibits an excellent blackberry and cassis-scented nose with smoky oak in the background. It is sweet, opulently-textured, surprisingly accessible and round, with an excellent finish. This is one of the finest wines from Les Ormes des Pez over recent years. | Chateau Palmer 2000 |
This takes time to unwind, but then it explodes with fruit and powerful, yet silky fine tannins. Perfumed and rich, with berry, cherry and tobacco character. Full-bodied, with super-well-integrated tannins and a reduced, refined, palate structure. It's compacted and powerful. Very racy wine. Best after 2010.

This has turned out to be a prodigious Palmer. The saturated purple color offers up sexy, full-bodied, almost masculine notes of roasted meats, blackberries, and creme de cassis intermixed with notions of toast, smoke and camphor. Only 50% of the production made it into the 2000, a blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon and 47% Merlot. The wine is opulent, rich, and full-bodied, with tannin that has become sweeter with age. This is a great Palmer that should rival the best of recent vintages, which have all been stunning, as this estate continues to go from strength to strength. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2030.

| Chateau Pichon Lelande 2003 |
A beautiful wine that is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, and 4% Petit Verdot, tippping the scales at 13% alcohol with a pH of 3.8, the wine has put on some weight since I tasted it last year and possesses broad, expressive notes of caramel, black currant liqueur, fig, and blackberries along with a hint of roasted coffee. Opulent, full-bodied, and concentrated with an exceptionally fleshy, expansive mid-palate, this wine has freshness, vigor, and delineation despite its rather plump, opulent, heady style. More and more this looks similar to the 1982 more than any other recent vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2022.

Very pretty aromas of plum, blackberry, chocolate, espresso and cherry follow through to a full-bodied palate, with ultra silky tannins, refined fruit and a long, caressing finish. This is fine and refined with a wonderful texture. Not quite the 2000, but excellent. Best after 2011.
